To take action against the growing global threat of increased spread of antimicrobial resistance, this call will fund international collaborative research projects aiming to improve, compare and evaluate the effectiveness, cost effectiveness, and uptake of existing interventions against bacterial or fungal infections. - Afbeelding

Hormone therapy can help many people with breast cancer. These drugs unfortunately do not work for every patient and even those who do respond often develop resistance over time. Patients with metastatic disease usually need to switch to other, often more intensive treatments. - Afbeelding
On behalf of the Netherlands, we are part of the international partnership Joint Programming Initiative on Antimicrobial Resistance (JPIAMR), currently a collaboration between 28 member countries. Many projects funded under the framework of the JPIAMR already resulted in outstanding publications that range over One Health areas (Human, Animal, Environment). Here we highlight three projects. - Investigations into Aspergillus fumigatus and the treatment are underway both nationally and internationally and will lead to advisory reports. This project will organize a stakeholder meeting to further results.

On 19 November, during World Antimicrobial Awareness Week, ZonMw awarded a Parel (Award) to Dr. Henk Schallig, parasitologist at Amsterdam UMC. He received the award for the RAPDIF study, which developed better tools and knowledge for tackling fever and malaria in Africa. - Afbeelding

A study published in Nature shows that cellular states linked to metastasis already arise as soon as invasive colon cancers are formed but are surprisingly not enough to cause spread by themselves. The findings may help to improve metastatic risk assessment and prevent unnecessary surgeries.
