- The gut microbiome—the community of bacteria and viruses in the intestines—plays a key role in the development of the immune system and in protection against viral infections. At the same time, certain viruses can disrupt both the immune system and the gut microbiome. However, the relationship between viral activity and the gut microbiome, and the role these factors play in ME/CFS, remain poorly…

We have commissioned the GO FAIR Initiative to implement the first steps of VODAN. VODAN stands for Virus Outbreak Data Access Network. This implementation network aims to shape data about the current corona virus outbreak in a way that makes them accessible for learning-algorithms (according to the Personal Health Train principle). - Due to the constantly changing situation regarding the corona virus (COVID-19) pandemic, the funding opportunity for Gender in Research Fellowships has been withdrawn.
- Did you register for a ZonMw-related meeting? Please check if it’s still taking place; it might have been postponed or cancelled because of the corona virus (COVID-19).

On 12 December, researchers, policymakers and other stakeholders gathered in Utrecht to exchange views on the transition to animal-free innovations and laboratory animal research. The symposium was organised by ZonMw and the NCad of which the knowledge agenda and the target images were the focus, respectively. - Afbeelding
Could a weakened immune system explain the symptoms of Long COVID? And, if should that be the case, would a COVID-19 vaccination help to reduce the symptoms? That is what infectiologist and clinical immunologist Godelieve de Bree from Amsterdam UMC investigates. In this study, she and her team examined participants who were already included in another, ongoing ZonMw project. - During the initial months of COVID-19, little was known about the nature, size, severity and duration of lingering symptoms following a COVID-19 infection. A definition for Long COVID did not yet exist. In our study, we are searching for answers to questions concerning Long COVID. Therefore, at the very least, we must know what Long COVID is. We therefore started the study by formulating a…
- Can we further develop the aftercare trajectories following a hospital admission as a consequence of COVID-19? We are investigating that in the regions Rotterdam, Rijnmond and Delft.

Data are the most valuable raw material in the 21st century. The improved (re)use of data is the key to faster innovations and better policy. That certainly applies in the area of health and care. So how can we ensure that data can also actually be reused? - Afbeelding
Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a common sexually transmitted infection. Amongst other effects, it can cause cervical cancer. Of the more than 80 different types of HPV, however, only some are potentially harmful. They are known as high-risk viruses (hr-HPV). A mass screening programme has been set up to detect them. - AfbeeldingIntegrity, quality and social impact are vital for the existence of science. Therefore, for several years, ZonMw and NWO have encouraged research into fostering responsible research practices and replication studies.

People whose immune system is compromised run a higher risk of complications if they contract COVID-19. Furthermore, we do not have enough evidence to show whether these people are sufficiently protected after being vaccinated. For this reason, the Netherlands Organisation for Health Research and Development, ZonMw, is facilitating eight studies focusing on the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines…
