Minister of Health, Welfare and Sport Hugo de Jonge informed the House of Representatives on Wednesday 1 April that the cabinet is allocating a total of €42 million for research on the most urgent corona-related research questions. It is estimated that these additional funds will enable some 80 to 100 research issues to be investigated. It is important that these resources are made available in a…
Researchers from Science (ENW | 57), Applied and Engineering Sciences (AES | 15), Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH | 54), and Health Research and Development (ZonMw | 23) receive Vidi grants. This enables the laureates to develop an innovative line of research over the next 5 years and further expand their research group.

With new grants totalling € 2,100,000 from ZonMw, 7 new breakthrough projects will start. These projects will do further research into microplastics and nanoplastics within 4 different themes, and will collaborate with the MOMENTUM 2.0 consortium that received follow-up funding earlier this year.
Vidi funding has been awarded to 109 researchers from the scientific fields of domain Science (ENW | 42), Applied and Technical Sciences (AES | 13), Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH | 35), and Healthcare Research and Medical Sciences (ZonMw | 19). With the help of the Vidi grant, researchers can further develop their own line of research.
20 talented researchers will receive an Off Road grant to explore their bold, out-of-the-box ideas within the field of (bio)medical science and healthcare. This grant offers them the opportunity to test their innovative hypotheses in 1 to 1,5 years. What do these researchers have in common? They dare to think beyond traditional boundaries.
Two Dutch research groups and industry will jointly develop animal-free innovations via the ZonMw call Create2Solve. Over the next five years, the projects will focus on a 3D model of human brain cells and a better test method for potentially toxic substances. The projects will contribute to limiting the use of laboratory animals in both industry and science.
The new Promoting Good Science (PGS) programme, which is the follow-up to the Fostering Responsible Research Practices (FRRP) programme, will be chaired by Sally Wyatt. PGS is aimed at encouraging sustainable improvements in the science system. Eduard Klasen is stepping down as former chair of FRRP, and he is confidently passing the baton on to his successor Sally, who wants to involve the broader…
In the ZonMw Open Competition 2024 round, a total of 29 research teams have been selected to receive funding from a total budget of €24 million. This funding enables the research groups to develop innovative team science initiatives that contribute to the long-term advancement of fundamental (bio)medical science and healthcare.
Fundamental research formed the basis for the personalised treatment of cancer patients. Thanks to whole gene sequencing, doctors can now treat their patients based on their genetic makeup. That is not only good news for the patient but also medical science, says Edwin Cuppen, director of the Hartwig Medical Foundation. ‘Knowledge about cancer is increasing, and much of that is entering the clinic…
