Infectious Disease Control 2025-2030

This programme runs from 2025 to 2030. The programme document is based on a literature review, Dutch and international research agendas, provisional results of evaluations, interviews with experts, field consultations, stakeholder meetings and coordination with other relevant ZonMw programmes. 

The programme includes a focus on collaboration with international funding organisations. Part of the budget has been reserved to enable Dutch researchers to exchange knowledge at international level.

We are also actively exploring how collaboration with parties in the Netherlands can help strengthen the Infectious Disease Control programme, and encouraging long-term partnerships and infrastructure building. 

This programme is a follow-up to the ZonMw Infectious Disease Control programme 2019-2023. Its goal is to develop and disseminate evidence-based knowledge of infectious disease, to make a substantial contribution to reducing the burden of disease and its impact on society. The programme has 4 sub-goals:

• To develop applicable scientific knowledge of pathogens that pass between people, and between people, animals and the environment.
• To develop scientific knowledge in policy, training and practice.
• To perform scientific research into cost-effective means of preventing infection in a social context.
• To encourage the establishment of long-term partnerships and knowledge infrastructures that can also be used during outbreaks, both nationally and internationally. 
• To promote the reuse and/or readying for reuse (in line as far as possible with the FAIR principles) of databases and other sources on which the project results are based. 

Infectious disease control is a broad subject area with many aspects, so certain aspects have been selected for particular attention. The following 5 themes have been identified that are connected in various ways:

1. Prevention
2. Communication, behaviour and society
3. Immunology and diagnostics 
4. Emerging infectious diseases, outbreak studies and infrastructure 
5. One Health and non-alimentary zoonoses

There are 2 overarching focal areas in the programme:

• Multi- and transdisciplinary collaboration
  Since the projects in the programme have potential implications for policy, research, training and practice, it is important that end users and experts with experiential knowledge are involved in the research.
• Sustainability of research
  In 2022 ZonMw signed the Sustainable Care Green Deal 3.0, and is keen to help reduce the negative climate and environmental impact of healthcare. We are working towards sustainability in our programmes and procedures, encourage sustainable implementation of projects, and expect researchers to consider sustainability goals.
