Lectures Summer School - Gender and Health 2021

The 'Summer School - Gender and Health' provides knowledge, awareness and skills for young researchers about the effects of sex and gender in health and the integration in biomedical research. The lectures are organised by ZonMw and ErasmusMC and are part of the Erasmus Summer Programme 2021.

Lecture 1: Implementing sex and gender in research - Research design pt. 1

In this first lecture of the series, associate professor Maryam Kavousi will go into the differences between sex and gender, and how different study components are affected by considerations of sex and gender.

Lecture by Maryam Kavousi, followed by a panel discussion with Maria Henneman (chair), Maryam Kavousi, Jeanine Roeters van Lennep and Lieza Exalto.

Lecture 2: Implementing sex and gender in research - Research design pt. 2

In the second lecture of the series, associate professor Maryam Kavousi discusses considerations of sex and gender in data collection, follow-up time, sample size and big data.

Lecture by Maryam Kavousi, followed by a panel discussion with Maria Henneman (chair), Maryam Kavousi, Jeanine Roeters van Lennep and Lieza Exalto.

Lecture 3: Implementing sex and gender in research – Research design pt. 3

In lecture 3 of the series associate professor Maryam Kavousi goes into study design and accuracy and random and systematic error (bias), and how this relates to considerations of sex and gender.

Lecture by Maryam Kavousi, followed by a panel discussion with Maria Henneman (chair), Maryam Kavousi, Jeanine Roeters van Lennep and Lieza Exalto.

Lecture 4: Implementing sex and gender in research – Research design pt. 4

This fourth lecture in the series deals with confounding and effect modification and how to analyse and interpret data accurately.

Lecture by Maryam Kavousi, followed by a panel discussion with Maria Henneman (chair), Maryam Kavousi, Jeanine Roeters van Lennep and Lieza Exalto.

Lecture 5: Literature search & resources | conceptualization of sex and gender

Lecture by professor Sabine Oertelt-Prigione. In this lecture she will discuss aspects such as how sex and gender are often conceptualized in biomedical literature, how to search for useful resources and different options for the operationalization of gender.

Lecture by Sabine Oertelt-Prigione, followed by a panel discussion with Maria Henneman (chair), Sabine Oertelt-Prigione, Petra Verdonk and Marijn van Wingerden.

Lecture 6: Gender in the research team

This lecture by professor Sabine Oertelt-Prigione will focus on gender in the research team and academic leadership. Topics such as balance in representation and leadership, and the value of (gender) diversity in research teams are discussed as well as consequences of lack of preparedness for leadership.

Lecture by Sabine Oertelt-Prigione, followed by a panel discussion with Maria Henneman (chair), Sabine Oertelt-Prigione, Petra Verdonk and Marijn van Wingerden.

Lecture 7: Sex and gender sensitive implementation

A lecture on sex and gendersensitive implementation by professor Sabine Oertelt-Prigione. She will draw an analogy with innovation diffusion and dive into topics such as ‘how do you involve important stakeholders?’ and ‘which players in the field do you need for effective implementation and when?’

Lecture by Sabine Oertelt-Prigione, followed by a panel discussion with Maria Henneman (chair), Sabine Oertelt-Prigione, Petra Verdonk and Marijn van Wingerden.

Lecture 8: Operationalization of sex and gender for journals and grant writing

This lecture by professor Sabine Oertelt-Prigione revolves around sex and gender in journals and grant writing and discusses varying policies of different journals and funding agencies and gives practical examples for grant writing and journal writing.

Lecture by Sabine Oertelt-Prigione, followed by a panel discussion with Maria Henneman (chair), Sabine Oertelt-Prigione, Petra Verdonk and Marijn van Wingerden.
