Veni is part of the NWO Talent Programme. It allows researchers who have recently obtained their PhD to conduct independent research and develop their ideas for a period of three years
Who can apply
The Veni target group consists of researchers at the stage of transitioning towards independence. The Veni grant can contribute to the researcher’s development in this area. The Veni grant is aimed at researchers with academic qualities that clearly exceed what is customary. The project to be funded should be carried out at an NWO-recognised institution in the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
Applications may be submitted by researchers who have obtained a PhD, regardless of whether they hold a (permanent) position or are based in the Netherlands or abroad. Researchers are eligible to apply if they obtained their PhD within the three years preceding the reference date for this round—January 1, 2025—or between January 1, 2025, and September 2, 2025. In certain cases, this period may be extended (see Section 3.4.2 and onward in the Call for Proposals).
What for
The aim of the NWO Talent Programme is to provide creative space for adventurous, talented, pioneering researchers to do research of their choice, develop their own line of research and further develop their talent.
The Veni grant is intended to fund scientifically innovative research and to enable promising researchers to establish themselves as independent researchers. Researchers who are significantly further along in their careers—for example, those in the process of establishing their own research group—are no longer considered part of the Veni target group. This is part of the assessment of the quality of the researcher. One of the aspects evaluated under this criterion is the applicant's alignment with the target group (see Section 4.3 in the Call for Proposals).
What to request
A maximum of €320,000 in funding may be requested per project.
The proposed project may have a maximum duration of three years. In the case of part-time research, the project duration may be extended proportionally to the actual time commitment, up to a maximum of four years. If the proposed project has a duration of less than three years, the maximum budget will be reduced proportionally. It is also possible to carry out the project on a part-time basis without extending its overall duration. Part-time appointments of less than 0.4 FTE are not permitted. You can submit your full proposal via Mijn ZonMw portal until 27th of January 2025, 14:00:00 PM CEST. The Mijn ZonMw online portal will be open for submissions on 16 december 2025.

- You can only submit a full proposal if you received a positive decision on your preproposal for Veni round 2025.
- Submitting an application can only be done via the online application system Mijn ZonMw with a personal Mijn ZonMw account.
- Write the application in English.
- The full proposal application contains a:
- Description of the research proposal, a motivation for the choice of institution, and a description of the fit between the research proposal and the applicant’s academic profile;
- a section on scientific and/or societal impact;
- a section on data management.
- Required attachment: budget form
- Optional attachment(s), if applicable:
- Completed and signed form 'Statement exceeding maximum funding' (see paragraph 3.5.6 in the Call for Proposals);
- Completed and signed form 'Declaration co-funding' as confirmation on the co-funding (see paragraph 3.5.7 in the Call for Proposals);
- Embedding guarantee, only required if the host institution has changed since the pre-proposal stage.
