Who can apply
Grants can be applied for by researchers who have already obtained their doctorates or researchers who are in the process of obtaining their doctorates at a Dutch institution. The researcher must be employed by an organization, so-called public law or private law legal entity, which is located in the Netherlands.
- The performer of the systematic literature review is the main applicant and can apply for funding under this grant call.
- The main applicant is at least in a PhD program or has already obtained a PhD.
- The lead applicant is also the project leader. If the lead applicant is not yet a PhD candidate, the project leader must be the principal investigator (PI) of the underlying research project.
What for
This grant encourages systematic literature searches focused on animal studies and non-animal innovations, with the aim of improving the findability and reusability of research results. Researchers first attend the workshop “Systematic literature review animal studies” provided by ZonMw-acknowledged experts and then proceed with their research independently, supported by these experts to ensure quality.
What to request
Funding can be requested up to a maximum of €25,000 for personnel costs, guidance by ZonMw-acknowledged experts and open-access publication costs. The standard duration is 24 months.
The following activities can be funded from this grant.
- Only costs for activities incurred during the duration of the project are eligible.
- In this grant round, you can apply for a maximum of €25,000 in funding. The standard duration is 24 months.
- This grant amounts to an allowance for personnel costs, supervision by ZonMw-acknowleds experts, and open-access publication costs.
- In this funding round you can apply for a maximum of €10,000 for an allowance for the salary costs for the person conducting the literature review.
- You can include the costs for Open Access publication in the project budget under the item 'Open Access'. This can be up to a maximum amount of €5,000 and is part of the total amount requested.
When
Applications for this call of proposal will be accepted on a rolling basis until 15 December 2025, 14:00 CET, and will be evaluated on a first-come, first-served basis. It is possible that the total available grant budget (the grant ceiling) may be reached before the deadline. In that case, the grant call closes earlier and this will be shown on this page.
Grant applications can only be submitted by the lead applicant through ZonMw's online submission system (My ZonMw). This grant call is continuous. The closing date is December 15, 2025, 14:00 CET. Grant applications can be submitted as long as the budget available for the call is not exhausted.

Especially if you first drafted your application in Word and then copied it to My ZonMw, it may happen that some characters (such as quotation marks) are not converted correctly.
