What is the Oncode Institute
The Oncode Institute is a virtual research institute that brings together more than 800 researchers from 13 Dutch partner institutions. Its goal is to accelerate groundbreaking discoveries in cancer research and translate them into new diagnostic methods and treatments for cancer patients. The institute focuses on three pillars: excellent scientific research, collaboration, and commercialization.
800 researchers, 1 mission
The complexity of cancer research calls for a collaborative approach. The Oncode Institute facilitates this by providing a network of more than 800 top researchers from 13 Dutch institutions. Within this network, researchers collaborate intensively and share their knowledge and expertise. The Oncode Institute then translates the fundamental insights gained into new, affordable treatment methods as quickly as possible.
Funding and partners
ZonMw has been funding the Oncode Institute on behalf of the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport since its establishment in 2017. In the first phase (2017–2023), the contribution amounted to over €21 million. The second phase runs from 2023 to 2028, during which ZonMw will contribute €11.5 million.
ZonMw is not the only partner of the Oncode Institute. KWF Kankerbestrijding, the Top Sector Life Sciences & Health, and the Ministries of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy (EZK) and Education, Culture and Science (OCW) are also investing in the institute.
Goals of the collaboration
- Accelerating fundamental cancer research
- Promoting valorization (translating research into practical applications)
- Making new, affordable treatments available to patients more quickly
