NWA Do-ReACT open
On 17 November 2025, the 'NWA Do-ReACT' Call for proposals will open. With a budget of €3,440,000, this Call for proposals aims to contribute to the validation of methods that do not involve animals for the safety assessment of chemical substances. The ultimate goal is to bring these methods as close as possible to regulatory acceptance.
Currently, the safety assessment of chemical substances still relies heavily on animal testing. The validation of New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) is an important requirement before they can be used as standard methods for safety testing and in a regulatory context. Although many NAMs have been developed over the years, they are not yet widely used in regulation.
Aim of the call
The aim of this Call for proposals is to stimulate the further development and validation of NAMs aimed at identifying hazards and/or risks associated with exposure to chemical substances. The goal is to bridge the gap between research and implementation so that these NAMs can be brought as close as possible to regulatory acceptance.
NWA Do-ReACT is aiming to fund one project, of a maximum of € 3.440.000 and an maximum duration of five years. Knowledge institutions and societal partners can submit a joint application. The interdisciplinary, knowledge-chain-wide consortium may consists of experts from the humanities and social sciences as well as exact sciences, experts in Dutch and/or European legislation, civil society organisations and experts from the industry. Collaborative workshops will bring together potential applicants and their ideas.
In the project a number of different methods can be further developed, while also focusing on improving insight into the validation process. This will enable the project to become a learning community, developing knowledge from different cases, while also facilitating overarching research aimed at achieving generic insights and recommendations.
Collaborative workshops
ZonMw is organising collaborative workshops on Wednesday 14 January and Wednesday 4 February. The two consecutive workshops focus on the exchange of ideas, exploring collaboration in consortia with other participants, and making the first agreements for jointly elaborating the application. After the workshops, the formed consortia will further develop the applications. Participation in both workshops is mandatory for main applicants. The deadline for registration is 7 January 2026.
