Marlies Schijven appointed as board member ZonMw
Marlies Schijven has been appointed as board member of ZonMw with effect from 1 April 2022. She has been appointed for a period of three years by the Minister of Health, Welfare and Sport (Ernst Kuipers) and by Marcel Levi on behalf of the Executive Board of the Dutch Research Council (NWO).
ZonMw is very pleased to welcome Marlies Schijven to the board. She will fill a vacancy in the board for the profile “Renowned (clinical) scientific researcher who is active outside of their own discipline and is a leading light with expertise in setting knowledge and research agendas across the spectrum of healthcare”. With her experience as a surgeon and a professor, but also thanks to her administrative experience as a regulator in healthcare and her previous activities as Chief Medical Information Officer for the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport, Marlies Schijven fits the formulated profile very well and is a great addition to the board.
Prof. Marlies Schijven has been staff surgeon at the Department of Surgery of Amsterdam UMC (previously: AMC) since 2009. Besides her work as a surgeon, she steers research in digital care transition as both a principal investigator and principal educator. Marlies was appointed as a professor of surgery in 2015 with the chair: Simulation, Serious Gaming and Applied Mobile Healthcare (University of Amsterdam). Marlies is co-founder and former chair of the Dutch Society for Simulation in Healthcare (DSSH). She studied at the Design Academy in Eindhoven, completed her studies as a health scientist and physician at Maastricht University and gained her PhD about virtual reality simulation techniques in surgery from Leiden University. She trained to become a surgeon in Eindhoven and Rotterdam and has specialised in gastrointestinal laparoscopic surgery (benign upper gastrointestinal tract). Marlies Schijven develops and carries out research into the effective use of black box systems, simulation, serious games and mobile applications in healthcare and the value of these for medical (postgraduate) educational programmes. In addition, she investigates the value of wearable technology or “wearables” for healthcare professionals and patients; the optimal connection of these in healthcare and, more specifically, the electronic patient file.
Successor Annelien Bredenoord
Marlies Schijven fills the vacancy that arose due to the departure of Prof. Annelien Bredenoord, who has been appointed as Rector Magnificus of Erasmus University Rotterdam with effect from 30 September 2021, and with effect from that date, resigned from her position as a member of the ZonMw board.
