ZonMw Rubicon supports the international ambitions of six medical researchers

The awarded projects are those of dr R.P.W.M. Maas, R.L.M. van Herten, C. Delecroix, dr R. Crespo, dr O. Elsharkasy, en J.F. van der Aar. The projects range from creating personalized analyses of sleep behavior disorder to the application of nanocarriers as delivery vehicles for gene editing. The Rubicon grant enables young researchers to conduct research at a foreign institute that offers the best environment for their research. The amount of funding depends on the chosen destination and the duration of the stay. Each year, NWO and ZonMw can fund around 60 young researchers (for a total amount of around €9 million, spread over three rounds). The allocations in this announcement relate to the second funding round of 2025.

Following the recent release of extra budget, because NWO receives interest on amounts that are still awaiting final allocation in connection with, for example, assessment procedures, it was decided to invest this in the Talent Line, among other things. This decision was partly motivated by the abolition of the starter and incentive grants. By adding more resources to, for example, the Rubicon we are creating extra opportunities for more talented researchers to develop, especially in times of cutbacks in research and science. The extra budget is only applicable to the 2025-2 round and not a structural investment in the Rubicon, which means it will have no effect on the upcoming rounds.
