MOMENTUM 3.0 granted: Follow-up study on the health effects of microplastics

Last changed:

New funding made available through ZonMw’s Microplastics & Health grant programme will allow the MOMENTUM 3.0 consortium to conduct further research on micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) in the coming years. The aim of this research is to produce insights that will reduce health impact and support effective interventions.

MOMENTUM 3.0 brings together scientists from universities, hospitals, research institutes and industry to achieve a better understanding of the health effects of MNPs. Building on existing research, the project focuses on core areas such as health effects, microbiological risks, risk assessment and interventions. These themes are based on a broad needs assessment conducted by ZonMw as part of the ‘Microplastics in our bodies’ Knowledge Agenda 2025

One of the key objectives of the project is to develop a risk assessment framework. As it is now known that microplastics primarily enter our bodies through the air we inhale, especially indoors, special attention will be paid to airborne exposure in indoor spaces, and to research on interventions that can reduce this exposure.

MOMENTUM 3.0’s findings will form the basis for further research while also enabling policymakers to take action. To speed up this process, the project is setting up a Collaborative Network that aims to engage stakeholders and facilitate the exchange and dissemination of knowledge, both nationally and internationally. Parties interested in contributing to these efforts can apply for the Collaborative Network.

About the Microplastics & Health grant programme

The Microplastics & Health programme funds research projects investigating the impact of micro- and nanoplastics on human health. These projects also explore potential policy interventions and practical solutions. They have already generated a substantial body of knowledge, establishing the Netherlands as a global leader in this field of research.

The MOMENTUM 3.0 consortium has been awarded funding in the fourth round of the Microplastics & Health programme, which allocated a total of € 2.26 million in grants. The project will start no later than 31 December 2025 and must be completed by 31 December 2029.
