Data and technology
Transformation
Utilising data and technology to transform existing approaches into a hybrid system for health, care and wellbeing is a complex process in which knowledge and innovation have a vital role to play. As a connector of knowledge and organisations, ZonMw works with partners to support and accelerate this transition through knowledge development and knowledge utilisation.
The importance of data
Data is currently scattered across a wide range of systems. As a result, the information required is not always available in the right place, in the right form and at the right time. This makes data availability a key component of today’s digitisation drive. The implementation and connection of data platforms are also crucial, as facilitators of data integration and exchange: processes which are essential to the use of hybrid care.
Data utilisation also gives rise to challenges in areas such as ethics, privacy, security and sustainability. Efficient and reliable data management is integral to every one of ZonMw’s projects. Applying the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable) ensures optimal use of data in both human interaction and automated settings.
Highly promising technologies
In recent decades, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of healthcare technologies and the speed at which they have evolved. Rapid developments in medical technology and Artificial Intelligence offer unprecedented opportunities, from improved diagnostics and prognosis, to precision medicine and streamlined administrative procedures. Innovations in VR/AR, 3D printing, robotics and nanotechnology also have the potential to massively expand opportunities and accelerate personalised care and real-time data exchange.
Implementing and scaling up healthcare innovations
The process of implementing and scaling up technological innovations and replacing outdated practices often proceeds at a slower pace than technological development itself. This is partly due to problems encountered when seeking to sustainably integrate innovations into existing care procedures and concerns about the quality and safety of these new technologies. The involvement of patients and healthcare staff in the development of healthcare innovations is another important aspect. Digital skills are key in this regard: it is vital that both groups are able to make effective use of new technologies.
Transformation requires knowledge development and utilisation
In its various programmes, ZonMw makes valuable contributions to knowledge acquisition in the field of hybrid care and practical innovation through data utilisation and the development, implementation and scaling up of technology (medical and otherwise) in the interests of health, care and wellbeing. ZonMw’s connecting role enables it to advance knowledge sharing and encourage interdisciplinary collaboration between healthcare providers, technology companies, policymakers and other stakeholders. In addition, ZonMw is ideally placed to alert policymakers to gaps in the knowledge needed to bring about the transition towards hybrid care.
