Towards a protocol to evaluate communication needs and abilities and optimal selection and use of augmentative and alternative communication for people with Rett syndrome

Projectomschrijving

Rett syndrome is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder. People with Rett syndrome (PwRS) have impaired motor function and communication and rely on augmentative & alternative communication (AAC). Assessments of communication ability and needs is often suboptimal and a rationale for which AAC device is chosen is often limited. This can result in suboptimal care, leading to disappointment and frustration for patients and caregivers, and inefficient allocation of funds from healthcare agencies. The goal of the “stimuleringssubsidie” is to bring together a coalition of stakeholders (parents, speech therapists, care organisation & health care insurance representatives, AAC suppliers) to develop a new care protocol for assessment of needs & abilities, selection & use of AAC, education & support for caregivers. Based on this, we will write a project idea and detailed application for DoelmatigheidsOnderzoek in which we will evaluate cost-effectiveness of this protocol compared to current care.
