Cognitive Support for older adults at work (Cogniwin)

Projectomschrijving

Many older adults have bright expectations for an active future and would like to continue managing their work, in an office as a paid activity. However, older adults working in highly computerized environments are often required to increase their capabilities, to acquire new knowledge and to adapt their working way to fast emerging new or upgraded software systems and methods. This requirement combined with all the eventual age related cognitive degradations make older adults feel mentally stressed to stay longer at their work. Also the fast taking up of new software applications by their younger colleagues reduces their self-confidence and make them feel insecure to continue working in such technological environments. Older adults require special attention and support to mitigate age related cognitive changes and to relieve their fear towards technological changes in their working environments in order to feel more positive in prolonging their stay at work. According to current studies, specifically age related memory changes and their effects on learning are the main reason for the difficulties older adults have in using computers. In addition to the above underlined issues, older adults are also subject to other cognitive degradations like working memory decrease. CogniWin aims to provide an answer to the above challenges of older adults by providing an innovative personalized system motivating them to stay for longer active and productive in computerized working environments by supporting them to maintain or even increase their efficiency and effectiveness at work. CogniWin supports the older adults to overcome eventual age related memory degradation and gradual decreasing of their other cognitive capabilities (i.e. speed of processing, concentration level), and at the same time assists them to increase their learning abilities enabling them thus to cope better with software application changes in their organizations. CogniWin is based on an innovative cognitive model, embracing various cognitive characteristics of the older adult. Moreover, CogniWin provides to older adults personalized well-being advice in order to avoid unwanted age related health situations at their work. Such a well-being advisor makes use of measures provided by an intelligent mouse, an eye tracking device and by also considering adult’s personal health related characteristics stored in the system. CogniWin addresses also the major issue organizations are facing related to knowledge retention and transfer by providing a Knowledge Retention Repository. This stores the older adults activities and serve to capitalize their know how under the form of best practices, manual of procedures. Coupled with the learning assistant, this part will serve as a knowledge transmitter for both older adults and new employees. This repository will be automatically enhanced and improved by saving daily activities and contextualizing them. It will be based on log trails, screenshots, mouse movement and key-loggers to capture tasks’ execution and their related contexts. The target group is the big group of older adults of 55+, with or without light physical or cognitive age related limitations, who are engaged in computerized tasks that require an intensive cognitive effort and a high tuning level of concentration. Typical mentally stressful and demanding occupations include among others accounting, financial management, administrative and health services.
