Samenvatting van de aanvraag
Many health-related behaviours (smoking, physical inactivity, low fruit and vegetable intake) are more prevalent in lower socioeconomic groups. We hypothesize that socioeconomic variations in health-related behaviour are largely due to variations in a number of environmental factors: access to products and facilities that are needed for (un)healthy behaviour, and material, psychosocial and cultural conditions. This study aims at testing this hypothesis, at elucidating the pathways through which these environmental factors impact on health, and at identifying entry-points for interventions and policies to reduce socioeconomic variations in health-related behaviour. The study includes focus group interviews, a postal survey, an in-depth interview, measurement of neighbourhood characteristics and an invitational conference. The core of the study will be an in-depth interview study among 400 individuals to study environmental determinants of behaviour and the mechanism through which these exert their effects.
