'Rehabilitation and Sports' is a co-operative project between the Dutch Union of Rehabilitation Institutions (VRIN) and the Dutch Federation for Adapted Sports (NEBAS). The aim of this project is to stimulate rehabilitating patients (rehabilitants) for a permanent active lifestyle, by directly aiming at sports participation and a physical active lifestyle during and after the rehabilitation period. A physical active lifestyle is expected to have a positive effect on functionality, mental well-being, quality of life, and health. The NEBAS and 9 co-operating rehabilitation centres have started a project to come to a structural program for stimulating sports participation and physical active lifestyle of patients during and after their rehabilitation period. To investigate whether this program actually contributes to an active lifestyle, a quasi-experimental research project into the effects of the above mentioned policy on sports participation, physical activity and health status in rehabilitants is proposed.
