The proposed study aims to reduce the incidence of major depression in adolescents who do not meet criteria for major depression, but do have a high number of depressive symptoms. High school students fill in a depression questionnaire. Those scoring high on this list are interviewed with the standardized instrument DISC. Those meeting inclusion criteria (no psychiatric disorder) are randomly assigned to the experimental or control condition. The adolescents in the experimental condition are offered a course of ten sessions, in which they learn skills to improve their mood. We expect that fewer adolescents in the experimental group will develop major depression than adolescents in the control group during two years of follow-up
