Samenvatting van de aanvraag

Epidemiological research shows that a low intake of vegetables and fruit in the daily food pattern is one of the most important nutritional problems, in particular in children of parents with a low socio-economic status (SES). Behavioural research points out that the lack of awareness of one's own vegetable and fruit consumption forms for consumers a major barrier to eating more fruit. In the Netherlands few research projects have investigated intervention methods that are effective in rasing awareness of vegetable and fruit consumption by parents with low SES and their children. For this reason, a study will be carried out in two cities measuring the effectiveness of two intervention methods in this area: peer education and tailored nutritional advice. These intervention methods will be expected to improve awareness and attitude for eating more vegetables and fruits in 9 through 12 year-old children with low SES and their parents. These particular methods were chosen because they are based on theoretical methodology and strategies, which form the basis of determinants of behavioural change, namely, awareness and attitudinal change These interventions proved effective with other target groups and seem to be effective potentially for low SES groups. If these interventions prove to be effective they can contribute to the prevention of chronical disorders such as cardio-vascular diseases, cancer, overweight, through which socio-economic health differences will be minimised.
