HEREiAM: An interoperable platform for self care, social networking and managing of daily activities at home

Projectomschrijving

The ageing of population is a new issue all over the world and it has considerable consequences for public services. The shift in the generation gap has changed policies and well-established social models: much of today’s public spending is focused on elderly people and in particular on social assistance and health care. As the contrast between supply and demand is more and more evident, it is of the utmost importance to help people maintain their independence in their own familiar surroundings at home rather than carry them to hospital or to care centers. Self-care at home is on one hand an ambitious aim able to combine the reduction of social costs and the improvement of the quality of life but on the other hand it is a complex issue that requires different professional skills and involves in a new way, aspects of social and economic policy as well as new technologies. Innovation – in all its forms – should play a key role in rethinking and changing the way we design and organize our society and environment and organise, finance, and deliver health and social care services, as well as the whole environment older people are living in. The key lies in promoting people-oriented investments, which bring tangible and proven benefits to end-users, help health and care systems to contain costs and unlock business opportunities. The aim of HEREiAM is to provide older adults with an innovative user-friendly technology able to help them during daily activities. Our solution consists of an integrated, smart platform enabling them to have access to a number of services and information directly from their TV set at home. With regard to the target group, the emphasis is on self-sufficient elderly people who want to be independent in the management of their day-to-day tasks. Our people-oriented technology in fact aims at enabling and facilitating people to do personal and social tasks thus keeping their self-sufficiency and sense of dignity. Target groups also include informal caregivers such as family, friends, and neighbours who provide care and support for a parent, partner, relative or friend. The starting point of our proposal is the need to have an interoperable tool, allowing the user to communicate directly from home, with all the social and economic stakeholders involved. This way the older adults will be able to contact their relatives, their friends, to book their shopping bag, to talk to the social services, to contact the chemist’s, the family or the attending doctor, to ask for a medical consult and so on. In order to overcome the digital divide of the older towards new technologies the project provide a very easy platform with TV as a graphic user interface, a sort of virtual window to the outside available services in order to improve social interaction and achieve self-management of daily activities. Thanks to social networking and real time video applications, the platform provides the users with the opportunity to interact and share their knowledge, opinions and aspirations with the wider community and enjoy the experience, thus preventing some social problems such as loneliness and isolation. Moreover, municipalities can inform the elderly directly at home with news and information relating local services, such as social events, elderly opportunities and so on. The testing of the platform will take place in three countries, in Belgium, in the Netherlands and in Italy. In The Netherlands we will use a real „smart house“ (a test/demonstration building) where we will integrate our system, evaluate the integration, technical functionalities, and usability and then implement it in real houses. Parallel with this testing we will prototype with a little amount of identified end-user houses the same system in Belgium. After the two validations both in the smart house in the Netherlands and the identified end-user houses in Belgium, HEREiAM will be transferred to the evaluation phase. In Sardinia we will develop a sort of demo-room to show the product to the selected families that in a second stage will be equipped with the HEREiAM system. Besides the group of the final end users, the testing will involve local service suppliers and TV stations that will grant the broadcasting of the interactive application to be used as an interface towards the whole interoperable system.
