Growing Roots: Connecting Elderly through Virtual Nature Spaces
Projectomschrijving

Loneliness amongst elderly is a growing societal problem, which not only has its origins in a decrease of social contacts, but also in a sense of disconnectedness from the world at large. Research indicates that contact with nature can inspire feelings of connectedness. However, insights specifying which particular nature features are essential, and how nature can be made accessible to elderly via Virtual Reality technology, are lacking. Therefore, our research project aims to increase feelings of social connectedness amongst lonely elderly via an interactive and social virtual nature environment. Research will be targeted at investigating which nature features can trigger feelings of connectedness. On a more concrete, social level, we will test means for creating a multi-person experience which allows elderly to virtually connect. A third research aim consists in developing a strategy for how to use these virtual encounters as stepping stones to actual encounters in the real world. Finally, we will take into account needs and expectations of elderly regarding Virtual Reality in order to anticipate on technology acceptance in their daily life. In doing so, our project will contribute to wellbeing of elderly, and lay the foundation for a community-based approach to healthy and active ageing supported by innovative technology.
