A theoretical framework for the design of persuasive technology to support communication and needs-articulation of people with dementia
Projectomschrijving

This project focuses on independent living with dementia. Crucial to providing support to people with dementia is open communication about challenges of the illness and accurate articulation of wishes and needs (VanderRoest,2009). Herein lies an important problem: patients are ashamed or incapable to talk about their illness and its impact on daily functioning (Claassen,2011). This project aims to generate fundamental yet applicable knowledge to design eHealth-technology to overcome difficulties in the dialogue between patient and caregivers. Potentially, eHealth-interventions can effectively persuade people to behaviour-change (Oinas-Kukkonen&Harjumaa,2009), but how does this apply to this specific target-group? We develop a basic theoretical framework based on existing literature. Then, in participation with the target-group, this framework is iteratively tested in a research-through-design setup: user-experiences with different prototypes generate empirical data, not aiming to improve artefacts, but to re-model and extend the theoretical framework on designing for communication and needs-articulation of people with dementia.
