B3CARE

Projectomschrijving

CT-screening voor B3-ziekten (longkanker, COPD, hart- en vaatziekten) opent nieuwe wegen voor preventie- en/of vroege behandeling. B3CARE wil voor het eerst biomarkers voor de B3 integreren in één screeningstest. Voor implementatie van de geïntegreerde B3-screening zijn validatie en standaardisatie van de imaging biomarkers, en het evalueren van mogelijke effecten op volksgezondheid en kosten essentieel. Voor alle B3 imaging biomarkers is het daarnaast nodig om referentiewaarden te bepalen op basis van leeftijd en geslacht in verschillende populaties. Dit kan alleen worden bereikt door het beschikbaar maken van een gestandaardiseerde, hoogwaardige beelddata biobank; die wordt geleverd in B3CARE.

Samenvatting van de aanvraag

Lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and cardiovascular disease (CVD), the so-called Big-3 (B3), are expected to cause most deaths by 2050. Early detection and prevention are crucial to lower the disease burden. Innovative low-dose computed tomography (CT) allows simultaneous, integrated assessment of early imaging biomarkers of lung cancer, COPD and CVD. Major advantages of integrated B3 screening are expected due to shared risk factors, B3 interdependence and cost-efficiency. However, a major impediment before establishing a B3 screening program is the lack of validated and standardized B3 imaging biomarkers. Accelerating the development and marketing of image post-processing software solutions requires a large and well-annotated, high-quality imaging data biobank. The aim of this project is to advance the technology readiness of integrated B3 screening with 2 TRLs. To reach this objective, B3CARE develops a large, high-quality imaging data biobank to determine biomarker reference values, validate B3 biomarkers using image analysis software and machine learning approaches. This will accelerate software development for CT-imaging data post-processing In addition, the health economics potential of B3 screening for personalized health strategies is evaluated. B3CARE will provide an invaluable resource for the accelerated implementation of B3 imaging biomarkers and computer aided decision support.
