Nurses on the move: towards high quality care in nursing homes

Projectomschrijving

Nurses can make the difference in the care of frail older persons in nursing homes, now and in the future! This is the point of departure of this project proposal. We propose the innovative research line 'Nurses on the move: towards high quality care in nursing homes'. The overall aim is to contribute to the improvement of functional status and reduction of disability in nursing home residents specifically, and to the improvement of quality of care in general. Therefore, the research line consists of three interrelated projects: (1) Effective nursing care, (2) Strategies to empower the (adequate) use of evidence in nursing practice, and (3) Nurse qualifications and leadership of the future. Care in nursing homes is complicated since residents are vulnerable to multiple healthcare problems such as malnutrition, pressure sores, falls, pain and problem behavior that often occur concurrently. We lack knowledge about an overall approach for nurses to manage these problems within a framework that improves functional status and reduces disability in residents. Furthermore, research evidence often is not translated to the bedside since nursing staff in general have relatively low levels of education and are not adequately prepared to apply scientific evidence to their daily practice. Finally, scientific research has shown that poor quality of care often is not associated with shortages in nursing staff per se, but with the skill level of nurses and the commitment of leadership to nursing. We therefore must provide nursing homes with nurse leaders, who serve as role models for other nursing staff in the care of frail older people, and to provide nurses with evidence-based tools to guide the improvement of functional status and reduction of disability in nursing home residents. The proposed research line contributes to an infrastructure where certified nursing assistants, enrolled nurses, registered nurses and specialist nurses along with scientists and nurse educators, can work collaboratively to develop, implement, and test innovative approaches to improve functional status and disability specifically, and quality of care in general.
