Antibiotica worden het meest voorgeschreven door huisartsen. Zij zijn dan ook een van de belangrijkste bijdragers aan de ontwikkeling van antibiotica resistentie.

Bij luchtweginfecties is antibioticagebruik meestal niet nodig

Luchtweginfecties behoren tot de meest voorkomende infecties. Uit onderzoek blijkt dat antibiotica niet of nauwelijks klachten verminderen bij patiënten met ongecompliceerde bovenste luchtweginfecties. Toch worden ze nog steeds vaak gebruikt hiervoor.

Apps voor gebruik van natuurlijke middelen en voor het goed omgaan met koorts

Op basis van literatuuronderzoek en expertkennis zijn twee apps ontwikkeld: een app voor het gebruik van natuurlijke middelen bij acute, ongecompliceerde bovenste luchtweginfecties en een app voor het goed omgaan met koorts. De apps kunnen gebruikt worden door patiënten, huisartsen en apothekers; in samenspraak of alleen. Het is de verwachting dat het gebruik van de apps bijdraagt aan het verminderen van het (onjuist) gebruik van antibiotica. En tevens dat het tegemoet komt aan de wens van artsen en patiënten om bovenste luchtweginfecties goed te behandelen en de klachten hiervan te verminderen.

Samenvatting van de aanvraag

Worldwide strategies to control antibiotic resistance and its consequences are being developed but are currently insufficient to control it. The rapid increase in antibiotic resistance is partly caused by misprescribing and overprescribing of antibiotics, based on patient demand/ pressure. Preliminary studies have shown that Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) GP practices and hospitals have substantially lower antibiotic prescription and antibiotic resistance rates compared to conventional practices, and can provide symptom relief. However, CAM strategies vary across countries, clinics and medical doctors. In order to offer conventional physicians a safe and effective alternative to antibiotics and to reduce misprescribing and overprescribing of antibiotics broadly, the available practical expertise and scientific knowledge on CAM/IM strategies must be explored and systemized. The working group will collect available information on the use of CAM strategies regarding the use and prescription of alternatives to antibiotics in The Netherlands, France, Germany, England and Switzerland. The Working Group will further focus on the development of an evidence and expertise based decision-making tool for (conventional doctors) and the implementation of this tool in the European countries.
