Effects of a ventilation intervention in classrooms upon cognitive performance and respiratory health of primary school pupils.

Projectomschrijving

In schools children have a high exposure to CO2, odour and other bio-effluents emanating from classmates, and to particulate matter dispersed from classmates and their clothes, and resuspended from floors. This exposure may influence the cognitive function and respiratory health of children. The available evidence is not sufficient to infer a dose response relationship between ventilation levels and parameters of cognition and health. This hampers the introduction of health-based ventilation guidelines. The aim of the proposed study is to collect data on the optimal ventilation level of classrooms. To assess the impact of ventilation a study of a new intervention is proposed. Current ventilation systems in Dutch schools are usually not capable of achieving sufficient outdoor air exchanges during the heating season. This study will test the hypothesis that clean air improves cognitive and respiratory performance. The proposed intervention is to install high flow-rate mechanical ventilation systems in 7th-grade classrooms of 12 representative primary schools. For the benefit of the study, the system has a recirculation mode which can be used in a double blind fashion to compare results to its outdoor-air supply mode. After baseline measurements, cognitive and respiratory tests will be performed in a cross-over design of recirculation vs. ample outdoor air supply. The data will be analyzed longitudinally: each pupil is his or her own control. Known potential confounders will be controlled for. The proposed study will provide information about the effects of different levels of ventilation on cognitive and respiratory performance. The results and recommendations will be disseminated amongst relevant authorities and professionals. The information can be used to set standards for ventilation in schools. The results may favour the design of healthier school buildings including their ventilation systems, and may optimize their use.
