International collaboration is essential for a global transition to innovations not based on animal testing. The House of Representatives has asked ZonMw, in its MKMD programme, to fulfil the Netherlands’ ambition of gaining a stronger international foothold in the debate on practicable alternatives. The Internationalisation module was therefore launched in 2014.
On the basis of this module, the first binational call was issued for innovations not involving animal testing for systems biology and toxicology: InnoSysTox, on which ZonMw is collaborating with the German Ministry of Education and Science (BMBF) and Projektträger Jülich (PtJ). Four projects have been funded, involving at least one German and one Dutch partner. The projects were completed at the end of 2018.
Given the promising results of the projects ZonMw and BMBF are exploring the possibility of issuing another call in 2019, if possible in collaboration with organisations in other countries.
