International perspective

Neurodegenerative diseases, like dementia, cause great stress on society, and thereby create  a challenge that needs to be tackled internationally. The themes of the Memorabel programme meet the goals of the Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) of the EU Joint Programme Neurodegenerative Disease research (JPND). Both programmes, Memorabel and JPND, strive for solutions that can be applied nationally and internationally.

In December of 2013 the G8 countries agreed to build an international effort to approach the problem of dementia. Among other things, the G8 countries decided the following:

  1. To set an ambition to identify a cure, or a disease-modifying therapy, for dementia by 2025;
  2. To increase the amount spent on dementia research;
  3. To develop an international action plan for research.

The Dutch initiative of the Deltaplan for Dementia corresponds with these ambitions.
