Citizen Science (CS) revolves around involving citizens (whether or not in their role as a patient) and scientific researchers. This can be done from both sides, to varying degrees: involvement and participation of citizens in agenda-setting, conducting, and evaluating of scientific research (citizen/patient participation) and involvement and participation of researchers in agenda-setting, conducting, and evaluation of citizen-driven initiatives in the field of knowledge and innovation (science participation).
In 2019 ZonMw, in collaboration with Health~Holland, organised a network meeting to further shape CS in health research and development. We also drew up a list with key points for learning and experimenting. In 2021 ZonMw will continue with learning and experimenting with CS: several programmes will turn their focus towards citizen participation in all phases of research and innovation.
In this programme ZonMw and Health~Holland collaborate to realise creative, innovative and - above all – sustainable solutions for the societal challenge Health and Care. In the programme citizens will take the initiative and will be leading all phases of research and innovation.
Involving citizens in solving societal issues is also central to this programme. The aim of the program is the (local) development of innovative solutions for societal challenges in the field of sport and exercise, together with citizens.
