Enabling Technologies Hotels

The programme Enabling Technologies Hotels (ETH) launched in 2013 to provide researchers with access to a broader range of high-end life sciences technologies and accompanying expertise. Researchers (guests) could reach out to service oriented facility (hotel).

Motive

Enabling Technology Hotels stimulates active collaboration between researchers with and without access to high-end technologies. With this unique grant instrument the researchers (guests) and owners of the facilities (hotels) received a joint grant to set up a collaboration.

Purpose

The main purpose of the programme Enabling Technologies Hotels was to provide wider access for researchers in the Netherlands to high-end technologies and the accompanying expertise and infrastructure by:

  • Introducing advanced life sciences technologies in public-private research partnership.
  • Propagating the use of data stewardship and integration principles, methods and standards in research projects.
  • Facilitation of integration of datasets in advanced multi technology projects.
  • Stimulation of novel interactions between research groups and technology providers.
  • Where possible, stimulating open access publications of research data.

Summary

The ZonMw programme Enabling Technology Hotels (ETH) was performed within the Topsectors Life Sciences and Health (LSH), Agri & Food and Horticulture & starting materials. It was financed by ZonMw and NWO Exact and Nature sciences. The programme has been set up in collaboration with the Dutch Techcentre for Lifesciences (DTL).

The Technology Hotel concept entails that researchers (the guests) who do not have access to high-end technologies, can obtain access to these technologies and accompanying expertise and infrastructure via a service-oriented facility (the Hotel). These Technology Hotels are listed on the website of DTL.

Programme specific information

The programme is closed. Since 2013, five calls for ETH-proposals have been held which has resulted in 196 ETH projects being granted.

From an evaluation of projects in the earlier ETH calls it was concluded that this programme successfully stimulates the use of high-end Technologies: all participants in the evaluation had the intention to continue working with the Technology. More than half of the participants in the evaluation indicated that collaboration with the Technology Hotel was continued after the granted ETH project.
