Due to a hack of the NWO network, the grant process was stopped in the period 13 February to 22 March 2021. NWO has now fully resumed the grant process and it has taken a decision about the planning of the Veni 2021 round.
ZonMw will adhere to the original planning for the Veni round. This means that the deadline for submitting full proposals is set for 20 May 2021. Subsequently, the granting decision will be taken in December 2021. Initially, NWO had decided to modify the planning of Veni rounds for all domains. At the request of the VSNU/NFU (Association of Universities in the Netherlands / Netherlands Federation of University Medical Centres), NWO decided to maintain the original planning of the Veni round for ZonMw. Applicants will shortly receive a mail with more detailed information.
NWO Talent Programme Veni is part of The Innovational Research Incentives Scheme (Vernieuwingsimpuls) that is directed at individual researchers at various stages of their careers. It includes three forms of grants:
ZonMw is the administrative executor of the Medical Sciences division of the Innovational Research Incentives Scheme. Researchers who whish to submit a Veni application in the field of Medical Sciences should use the ZonMw ProjectNet system instead of NWO Iris.
Each year there will be one Veni application round, traditionally in the first week of January.
The Veni grant offers researchers who have recently gained their PhDs the opportunity to further develop their ideas towards an independent research line. The grant is for a maximum of 250,000 euro and a period of 3 years.
Researchers who have gained their PhD in the last 3 years before the deadline of a round are allowed to submit an application. Exceptions are made for researchers who have undertaken an completed training in a clinical specialism after their PhD or who had reduced research time due to maternity leave, paternity leave, sick leave or a part-time research appointment with care responsibilities. Please check the FAQ-document or contact us at talent@NWO.nl for further information about extension of the deadline.
With effect from 2011 a new submission condition applies to applicants. For the Veni and Vidi rounds, researchers may only submit a proposal on two occasions. Only applicants who had already submitted a proposal twice before 2011 may submit a third application via a transitional arrangement. For Vici, researchers may submit a proposal on three occasions.
The researcher does not have to make any arrangements with the host institute until he/she has received the award letter.
The aim of the scheme is to promote innovation in academic research. It gives creative and talented researchers the opportunity to conduct their own research and so gain entry to or promotion within institutions conducting academic research in the Netherlands.
The target group for the scheme consists of outstanding researchers (men and women who rank among the top 10-20% of their peer group).
