Purpose of call

The new dementia research programme will focus on the Kingdom of the Netherlands as a whole, including the Caribbean parts of the Kingdom. The goal of this call for grant applications is to improve the quality of dementia care for people with dementia and their loved ones in this region. To strengthen and safeguard the local organisation and infrastructure of dementia care over the long term, this call for grant applications focuses on collaboration between the ‘Windward’ islands (Saba, St. Eustatius, St. Maarten) and the ‘Leeward’ islands (Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao).

Sums available

In this grant round, funding can be requested for action research in the field of dementia. Action research combines research and implementation. Close collaboration is required between practitioners, people with dementia and their loved ones, informal carers, government and research.

Requirements

The research must focus on developing and using knowledge to provide sustainable solutions for dementia care that are relevant to healthcare practice, people living with dementia and their loved ones. The approach must be focused on and be applicable to all six islands and should be linked to local dementia plans.

Eligible candidates

A partnership must be established with relevant parties in the context of dementia care for the Dutch Caribbean. The partnership will at least consist of parties from:

  • practitioner organisations
  • research organisations  (with knowledge and experience of the region)
  • educational institutions
  • representation of people with dementia and/or their loved ones/informal carers
  • representation of local communities, such as local authorities, administrative bodies or governments.
  • optional: other policy organisations

Budget

For this grant round, €250,000 is available. The maximum grant that can be applied for from ZonMw is €250,000 per project application. The duration of the project should be between 18 and 24 months.
