Call for proposals of maximum € 10,000 for International Exchange and Collaboration grants in Electromagnetic Fields & Health (EMF&H)

Please note that this call is only for international proposal with a maximum of € 10,000. Proposals for International Exchange and Collaboration from € 10,000 to a maximum of € 50,000 can be submitted in a separated call.

Aim of the programme and Call
Are there health effects of exposure to electromagnetic fields and what is the potential impact of new technologies on human well-being? Scientific research has not kept pace with the rapidly increasing progress of technological development in this area. By order of the Dutch government, via the Netherlands Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment (VROM), ZonMw is commissioned for the programme Electromagnetic Fields and Health (EMF&H). Scope of the programme is to substantially enhance the Dutch knowledge infrastructure in the area of electromagnetic fields and health, giving the Netherlands its own scientific authority in this area.
EMF&H is a relatively new research area in the Netherlands. Institutes in some other countries, however, have long-standing expertise in this field. It is therefore useful to enable Dutch researchers to learn from research in other countries. Consequently, ZonMw has chosen to fund international exchange and collaboration. The goal of this call is to strengthen the Dutch research infrastructure in the area of EMF in such a way that it will make a substantial contribution to international research efforts in this field.
The international exchange and collaboration grants allow Dutch researchers to gain experience abroad and to foreign researchers to work in a Dutch institution (exchange fellowship). They will also allow researchers to set up an international research project, to invite an expert from abroad or to attend or organize a national or international meeting or workshop that is directly beneficial to Dutch EMF research.

For more background information on this programme, please see www.zonmw.nl/emv.

Conditions

Eligible candidates
Grants are available to Dutch research institutes and universities, the budget will be tied to an institution and not to a person. In addition, proposals can only be submitted in connection with projects already running under this programme or by researchers who can demonstrate that they have substantial personal experience in EMF research. Projects will be supervised and coached by a committee appointed by ZonMw.

Sums available
A maximum of € 10,000 is available for each of these projects, with a maximum duration of 1 year. A total budget of € 350,000 is available for the calls International Exchange and Collaboration max. 10k€ and 10-50 k€. The order in which the proposals are submitted is important when the budget is running out.

Assessment procedure

Project criteria

  1. The quality of the proposed project will be key. The following aspects are particularly important:
    1. A clear description of the scope and aim of the project.
    2. In case of a visit: a detailed time planning and elements of the work to be done.
    3. In case of a meeting: a detailed planning of the scientific programme (time table, speakers with tentative titles) and budget for speakers and organization.
    4. The scientific track record of the researcher(s) and host institution.
    5. A plan for making the knowledge and experience accessible to the Dutch EMF community (e.g. by publication, via a website, open invitation in case of a meeting).
  2. The relevance of the exchange, collaboration and/or meeting for the ongoing own research, for the call and for the programme as a whole.
  3. The argumentation for the budget choices made. Consider the following factors: travelling costs, accommodation costs, (registration)fees, rent for meeting place, communication etc. An extended budget proposal (see attachment in the call) has to be enclosed.

Procedure
The proposals will be assessed by ZonMw. However, for separate proposals ZonMw can decide to consult the programme committee.
You will receive notice of the committee’s decision about four weeks after submission. Successful projects have to start within six months after the grant has been awarded.
