From different parts of the world the Heads of International Research Organisations (HIRO's) come together anually to discuss and coordinate issues of shared interest.
On the 13th of June the meeting, on invitation from the ZonMw delegate Bob Pinedo, was held in The Hague.
nut just the CEO's of the internationally operating medical research councils form Europe, also those from the United States (NIH), Canada, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, China and India were present at this informal network meating. Other regular guests are delegates from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Wellcome Trust, The European Committee and the European Research Council, EMBL.
Among the issues that are discussed are world-wide pandemics, the sharing of world-wide database knowledge, eg on genome testing, cross-border funding , peer review, research training voor Clinicians, open acces publishing, biosafety ad biosecurity, and much more.
The HIRO netork had been established aprroximately 10 years ago by George Radda, ex CEO of the British MRC.
